What| Arrival/recovery/training
Where| The medbay, and then the training rooms.
When| After “The Reject Pile” and “An Eye for an Eye”

[ CLOSED TO THETA AND NORTH ]
It had been a hell of an arrival. She’d just wanted a moment to catch her breath, to gather her strength so they could get the hell out of that hell hole of a base, only she didn’t have the chance. She’d arrived with warnings flashing on her HUD, unable to really comprehend what was knocking her out before she was knocked out.
And then, waking up in this medical ward. They’d at least answered her questions as soon as she started demanding answers. Shvaughn is quick to appear, to explain what’s going on. Carolina might be dehydrated and hurting, but she takes advantage of someone willingly answering questions to keep asking them.
And when she’s done, and rests, the next time she wakes up, Brande is there. Even though she’s not done recuperating, she’s quick to agree to become a Legionnaire. Even with everything going back home - but Shvaughn had assured her they wouldn’t be in danger.
Which is what leads to this - her having the ring nearby her hospital bed, turning over the omnicom in her hand. She’s still relegated to bed rest, and she thinks she’ll catch up on any information she can get a hold of, while she’s figuring out what the hell kind of outfit she’s going to have.
Unbeknownst to her, though, agreeing means she’s registered - means she pops up in a scannable database.
[ CLOSED TO CONNIE ]
Carolina’s been in the recovery wing for another day when they bring someone else new in. She’s looking at the omnicom when they bring her in, and so she misses it at first, until she hears the voice of a nurse checking her over. It’s the name that catches her.
That drags her gaze away, locking on the other hospital bed. That’s someone she didn’t quite realize was here, the literal definition of seeing is believing.
“CT?”
[ HOSPITAL (OPEN) ]
Carolina will be in the hospital for a few days, from her arrival to her release. She’ll easily accept visitors… no matter who they are, or why they’re coming by.
[ TRAINING GYM (OPEN) ]
She knows she’s developed powers - discovered the use of some of them in the hospital. Accidentally phasing through her bed had been one of them, and they’d been lucky she hadn’t ended up with a metal wheel through her body before she phased back.
She’s been having training lessons, but even though she was stuck for days on end in her own armor - she’s not going to take it easy. Even though she’s only cleared for light duty and training, here she is in the training gym.
She might be spending some time kicking and boxing a punching bag - but she’s also stopping to test out her new powers. She’ll move forward to move through the punching bag, or give it a hard hit and then brace herself against it coming back, seemingly becoming as hard as rock given that it bounces back without her giving an inch.

"Mission went south back home. When I got rescued, I somehow ended up here," she says by way of explanation. Already, Carolina is leaning over and flicking the button on the side of the bed that drops one of the arms, allowing her to swing her legs over.
She's in a scrub-dress, and it's clear she's gained more scars. But right now she's more interested in getting up, taking her IV with her, and making her way over to Connie.

There's an odd feeling of relief in thought, knowing that Carolina wasn't taken out of the fight just yet. That both she and Wash were still kicking, still living after all the hell they had gone through, both during Freelancer and after, it seem. Hell, long before Freelancer even started in Carolina's case.
As Carolina starts to make her way over to Connie's cot she can't help but tense, her gaze sliding momentarily around the room, checking her possible exits. Not that she could run far in this state, but she could make a break for it if she needed to. But after that first glance, Connie watches Carolina and lets her head sink back into her pillow a bit more.
"You know how I left. Don't get far with wounds like that. Definitely don't with a bullet in your head. I...I shouldn't be here, but I am."
Whole lotta good that seems to do, nowadays.

She doesn't know what to say. Well - she does, the thing that she never got to say before.
"I didn't want that to happen. I didn't know what he was doing until after," she says, her voice thick with an emotion she's trying to swallow down. "Connie, I'm sorry."
no subject
Damn the sedative making everything foggy, Connie has to refocus her attention on Carolina when she draws near. It's...odd, speaking so freely. But if Connie's lucky, this is all a trick. One last illusion before the end hits, or the virus she fell to takes over again.
"You got out. Hell, I heard you retired...you got what I wanted us to be able to have after everything."
A soft snort escapes her as her lips twitch with a dry smile.
"So...it was worth it."
no subject
"Nothing was worth what happened," Carolina says, and if she sounds harsh when she says it - it's the truth. What happened to North and South when she learned of the files later - pitting them against each other. What happened to Wash - to York, to Connie herself.
And that has her oddly emotional, especially given Connie's state of being right now. Carolina hesitates, then reaches out, touching her hand to Connie's wrist.
"You know I'm bad at retirement, right."
no subject
"Worth trying to stop it," Connie counters when she glances down at the touch to her wrist.
Huh...somehow she didn't expect to actually feel it. Tentatively she lifts her hand to catch Carolina's, giving her fingers a squeeze. She feels real, her fingers are just as rough and calloused as Connie's. There's silence as she takes a few moment to swallow past the sudden lump in her throat, blinking back the sudden surge of emotion as she squeezes Carolina's hand again, clinging to the clarity of her presence through that connection.
No illusion is that convincing. This was real.
"So I've heard," Connie says with a rough chuckle, "Heard something about a burning waterpark?"
no subject
"I'm glad you tried." That is the truth, even if ultimately it lead to her death. And then Carolina hears that comment, and she laughs, high.
"Yeah. They're the only teams I've ever met that could pull something like that off."
no subject
It's good to hear Carolina laugh, god it's been forever since she last did.
"Can you tell me about them? All I know is pieces from what Grif and Tucker have told me."
no subject
"But... they care about each other, even if they won't say it. I've seen them do some crazy shit just because they worked together. And they gave me and Wash a second home," She says, her tone growing soft. "It didn't matter that we were big bad Freelancers. Didn't matter how good we were. As long as we were with them, things would work out."
no subject
Connie may be missing a lot but time-wise but, that return to normal or...well, maybe a little past normal and back to a different extreme of absurd seems to be doing both Carolina and Wash good. The Project didn't exactly breed a healthy environment for relationships between Freelancers or Sim Troopers but she's glad they've still got the chance to make new friends. Trustworthy ones too, from the sound of it.
"I'm glad you both got a second chance," she says, giving Carolina's hand a light squeeze, "And I'm glad you're here."
no subject
But her tone is warm, and clearly she's not as put out as she is claiming to be when she's talking about him or the others.
The thing about second chances, though - is that she knows how many people didn't get them. She squeezes Connie's hand back, finally tilting her head.
"Hey. You look like you need rest. I'll be here when you wake up, okay?"
no subject
She grins even as she feels her head weigh heavier against her pillow. Stupid sedatives. Still...Carolina as she is now, understanding and more at peace that Connie's really seen her before, is a much better sight to wake up to than a cold and unfamiliar medbay room.
"Thank you," she sighs as her eyes slip closed, giving Carolina's hand one last squeeze, "I'll talk your ear off later..."
