Party Down
Who| Everyone!
What| A party
Where| In the Sim Rooms
When| After "Whistling in the Dark"
Warnings/Notes| N/A
Avoiding the destruction of Legion World was more than enough reason to throw a party, especially since its destruction could've meant the Lunar Debris Field might have fallen out of its orbit onto Earth. After Legion World's repairs were underway and the ship was mostly safe again, the old-timer Legionnaires decided to throw a little party in celebration of the newbies getting through their first trial by fire.
Even though duty might call them away, they all figured on being able to spend at least a little time hanging out with the rookies.
One of the Sim Rooms proved itself to be the best place to have a party, since the inside could be made as big as they needed it to be. In one section they had a massive setup for laser tag, and in another area there were games and food and couches in a massive square.
Times like these weren't going to be easy to come by, if the kind of crisis the Lux had caused was any indication, so it was time to enjoy their free time while they had it.

Re: Kid Quantum
"That can't be good on those ribs," she said with a flicker of a smile. "For the record, Legion Leader duties to not include standing between you and Dr. Gym'll when he comes for your head."
no subject
He took her hand and climbed to his feet with an "oof," and held a hand to his ribs.
"Think I'm gonna grab a beer and live vicariously through everyone else by watching them have fun."
no subject
She figured that Rich would notice, if he were any good at his space cop job back home. She also figured that he wouldn't try to scurry off without finding out why.
no subject
But he wanted for her to make the first move. So he just picked up a Silverale and popped off the top.
"I'm kind of amazed beer still tastes the same this far in the future but I guess it's kind of hard to mess up."
He took a sip and looked back at the others, playing their games.
"...And I'm definitely amazed Pictionary still exists."
no subject
She poured her smoothie into a cup and slugged some of it back. "Can't speak for the beer, though. I'm one of the ones who ended up in another galaxy, not the twentieth century." She leaned back against the bar and eyed him for a moment. "You said you had experience dealing with weird space nass, yeah? What do you think about what we just had to deal with?"
no subject
He leaned back against the table and took a sip of his beer.
"It needs to be monitored. Closely. Although I would be careful about the station you guys have there being full of people. Obviously, you need better scanners for xenohazards. And as much as they need to be there to threshold down and save any newcomers that pop up on the planet, you'd better make sure they have some kind of ultra-fast evac system in case something big and nasty comes through and they need to make a quick exit. Maybe make sure they have personal teleport discs or something so they can get to their threshold room fast."
no subject
"Sounds like good assessment to me," she agreed, taking another sip of her smoothie. "Brainy's already working on the scanners, I'll look into improving evacuation procedure."
She idly rolled her cup between her palms.
"Speaking of, I got the short version of your experience. Care to elaborate on anything? I like to know people's strengths so I can put them somewhere to maximize that."
no subject
A pause as he tried to think about what other skills he could offer.
"Disaster relief and evacuation coordination. Done a lot of that."
What else?
"You want me to advise on tactics, I can do that."
Just like he had a moment ago.
"You could also put me on diplomacy stuff, if it's the practical 'how do we make everyone get along?' type rather than the slimy type where you have to intellectually outmaneuver people, but I'll probably never forgive you." He flashed her a little grin, and then joked, "Unless there's some kind of gorgeous space queen involved or something. Then we'll be best friends forever."
no subject
So no, not much call for someone to flirt their way out of trouble.
"How long have you had your powers?"
no subject
He wasn't exactly lying. He'd tempted more than one person to consider looking outside their own species. He wasn't sure how he'd managed to, but he had.
"I've had my powers about ten years, give or take. Got 'em when I was seventeen. There were some gaps during times Xandar needed the power for its defense or when I was on the outs with the Corps for a little while, but I've had 'em most of that time."
What was she angling for here? He had the feeling it wasn't just familiarizing herself with him. Otherwise she wouldn't have felt the need to nudge him away from everyone else.
no subject
Just a casual assessment of the new guy, Rich. Nothing to do with the fact you've claimed a decade's worth of experience, but you're the only one of the newbies who got injured. Nothing at all.
no subject
"The first time I lost my powers, I went back to a civilian life for a little while 'til I got 'em back. The other times, I did what I could to help my teammates even without powers. The last time I was actually dying because my body's now so changed by my powers that I need 'em to live, so I mostly spent all my time working on just getting them back before I kicked it. And worked on helping my friend, the AI that'd helped me control them, realize he'd lost it and needed help."
She was digging. What was she thinking? Why was she -- oh. Oh, he thought he had an idea of what she was digging at.
Of course. Back home, he had a rep to coast on. Even back on Earth, he'd become fairly well respected.
But not here.
"If you're wondering why I'm tripping all over myself, it's because one of my usual powers is complete body awareness. At full power, I can do a hairpin turn at near lightspeed and going from that to being normal means almost having to learn to walk again. Last time I lost them -- the time I was dying -- I was clumsy like I am now. So clumsy I crashed my dad's car into a fire hydrant trying to drive."
He raised an eyebrow.
"I'm not making all my experience up, if that's what you're thinking."
That was totally what she was thinking.
no subject
His tactical calls weren't bad either, which lent veracity to what he'd said about his history. And at least he was aware that he was 'off' at the moment instead of pretending it would go away if he ignored it.
"I assume your trip through the rift also fixed your body's reliance on your powers?"
no subject
He shrugged.
"I need it to survive but I'm pretty sure I don't need all of it so the sliver I still got is apparently enough."
He tapped his fingers against his bottle.
"But they said if I didn't get feeling and dexterity back I should probably do some physical therapy with them and I'm thinking I need to take 'em up on it. I was too slow and uncoordinated during everything with the Lux."
He nodded towards where everyone else was playing laser tag.
"And I'm tripping over my feet even just playing games. My brain's where it was, but my body's not keeping up."
no subject
"Can you think of a way you might be able to show off that brain of yours?" she asked. "We've got a holo-room if that would help solve the body problem."
no subject
So maybe he still doubted himself sometimes, in his deepest, darkest moments. Sometimes he worried that what he did wasn't enough. Sometimes he grieved when he wasn't fast enough, didn't answer those 8x8's quick enough to save everyone.
When it came to proving things to himself, he sometimes had his doubts.
When it came to having confidence in the face of other people wanting proof, well. He was more than happy to flaunt what he could do in their faces.
After all, that's why he was so good at the hero thing. Sometimes that's what you had to be to get the job done -- the cockiest son of a schlag this side of the Zeta Reticuli.
"Computer, can you make a separate, little private room for Kid Quantum and I here?" he asked the computer in charge of the Simroom. A door appeared and he walked through it, gesturing for her to follow him into the empty white room beyond with the arm hand that was holding his beer. "Any self-respecting leader runs battle sims and war sims to keep their brain sharp. I want you to call up the hardest scenario you've got. The one you can never beat."
