Whistling in the Dark - Mod Plot [Log Post]

Who| Everyone who signed up!
What| Whistling in the Dark Plot. The gang has to deal with threats around Legion World and the possessed
Where| Everywhere!
When| After Ferro's post on the network
Warnings/Notes| N/A

Everywhere around the ship things start to fall apart. Aside from the juddering as it shakes, lights start turning off, life support starts failing, the artificial gravity starts malfunctioning, and strange bursts of energy from the ship's engine causes electronics to stop working. And that's not all: it seems like every possible system that could be acting up is acting up.

In short, Legion World is a mess. And all they know so far is that some of the support staff may be responsible and that they're also possibly possessed by some kind of alien infestation that occasionally makes their eyes flash black.

It's time to get answers -- something that will be difficult with all the threats they're facing on the ship. Not only do the Legionnaires have to survive, the support staff will occasionally need rescue, too.

With the rate that systems are failing, the odds are not in their favor, especially since these malfunctions caused the escape pods to automatically launch without any crew in them. They'll have to work fast to stop the threat before everyone on Legion World dies.

"It's a nice trick when it works," Saralegui commented dryly with a pointed look at the twisted metal remains of the door, and then unceremoniously ducked through the gap Hiccup had created. At least the air and heat seemed to be working beyond this point, even if the lights were still out.

"Wait," he said, pausing just inside the doorway, voice suddenly low. "Do you hear that?"

It might have been some other piece of machinery malfunctioning or something. But he could swear it had sounded like distant footsteps up ahead.

"Might be nothing," Hiccup whispered back, "but...Toothless, you smell anything?"

The Night Fury sniffed at the air, and made soft low growl.

"Guess that answers that question. There's definitely somebody up there."

"Someone not bothering with a light," Saralegui noted, inclining his head towards the unbroken darkness ahead. Of course, he wasn't using a light himself either, but it was probably safer to be suspicious.

He frowned, but glanced back to Hiccup and his hound of a dragon. "Well? No use in staying here," he said, and forged onward down the dark hall.

"Neither are we," Hiccup pointed out, "unless bio-luminescent lizards count."

He and Toothless followed after, keeping alert for any sudden noises.

"You're using it to see, aren't you?" Saralegui shot back over his shoulder, the edge of a slight smirk visible in Toothless' glow. "I'd say it counts."

Moving forward, they could just see the shape of a person stumbling about, just a shadow in the darkness. The movements certainly seemed unnatural, but more like a person still learning to use their own legs than someone blind in the dark. As they came closer, soft muttering became just barely audible.

Hiccup paused, remembering one basic thing that should've happened earlier.

"It occurs to me that we didn't actually work out what we were going to do once we got this far."

"I said I'd handle it, didn't I?" Nonchalant, Saralegui waved off those concerns with an airy gesture and, of course, the most vague answers possible. "Just stay alert in case they get aggressive or some other potentially fatal situation comes up."

He missed his bodyguard. It was nice, having someone he could trust to watch his back and follow his orders without question.

"Most people would consider how to be somewhat relevant-"

The Lux took this moment to finally notice the trio's presence. Specifically the light coming from Toothless. It wasn't enough to drive it out of its host, but it was enough to set off its addled primitive instincts.

"NO. MORE. POISON."

"-but I think we can hold off on the explanations."

"Mm," was Saralegui's only response to Hiccup before he stepped forward to approach the possessed man. "Shhh. Stop."

It was always harder to notice in the light, unless one was looking directly at his eyes, but in the dark there was no hiding the glow that seeped into them. An eerie blue not far from Toothless' bioluminescence, it overtook the gold of his eyes and cast a faint light in the darkness, just enough to illuminate the Lux freezing in place.

His temporary companions forgotten for the moment, Saralegui focused intense on the Lux, wearing an unsettling smile even while speaking in a soothing tone as if to a spooked animal.

"Enough, now. Why don't you tell us what exactly you're after here? How many of you are there?"

This much, however, didn't seem to have so clear an effect on the thing before them. The Lux didn't respond in any helpful way. It trembled, like one not enthralled enough, and made a gurgling sort of moan in lieu of actual words. Saralegui's smile slipped away all too quickly and he pressed even harder with his will -- the words of the commands didn't really matter that much, as it was all about the intent, but it didn't seem to be registering the way the initial order to stop had.

The feeling of the Lux's consciousness fighting against his own was almost reminiscient of his attempts at working his magic on animals when he was younger. Not exactly the same, because it appeared to understand his intent at least somewhat, but the sense of foreignness, that inhuman mind, remained. The Lux remained frozen where it was, but it writhed under Saralegui's control as much as it tried to away from the soft light sources.

"Hn." He sounded mildly irritated with that bit of failure, but bit down on any great display of it. "It's too unlike a human for anything precise." His eyes never left the Lux, pinning it in place, but his tone and the way he turned his face back just slightly implied he was back to speaking to Hiccup. "What to do with it, then?"

"I've got something to drive it out with," Hiccup said as he pulled out Inferno, not bothering to light the blade yet, "but nothing to catch-"

A green disc of teleportation energy appeared in the hall and Gates stuck his head out of it, looking around to see if anyone was there that could use one of the vacuum flasks.

"Hey, you! Bipeds!" Gates still hadn't memorized all their names yet. "Take this!"

He chucked the flask at Hiccup. He didn't have much time to get all of them handed out.

The flask smacked Hiccup in the face and clattered to the ground.

"-it with. Ow. Guess this solves the problem." He said, rubbing his face. Picking up the flask, he flicked his blade alight, and brought it as close as he safely could to the worker's face. The Lux fled from the staff member, at Hiccup use the flask to vacuum it up.
