Movie Night IV: Movie Harder

Who| Wash and anyone who wants to join
What| Movie night!
Where| The same lounge movie night is always in
When| A few days after Silent Horizon and No Sanity Clause
Warnings/Notes| They're watching Clue, because Tim Curry is the cure for everything.

It has been, to put none too fine a point on it, a shitty week. Everyone needs a place where they can relax and get their minds off what's happened; to that end, Wash figures it's about time for another movie night, and goes for a comedy this time. Sure, Clue is technically a murder mystery with a slow build, but he's pretty sure people will enjoy it as long as he's up front about it.

There's tables full of snacks and drinks set up, per usual. Extra blankets are piled on the arms and backs of chairs and sofas, because blankets make things better and therefore need to be available. There's a sign outside the door with the movie's title, MPAA rating, and a brief summary, along with a note at the bottom: Movie night is neutral territory. Might as well make it known up front.

Victor

No matter what the contents of Victor's social media accounts may indicate, he and Yuuri are in fact independent human beings fully capable of functioning without being within arms' reach of each other. As such, he shows up to movie night toting his dog rather than his boyfriend. He then claims a plate of food, sampling just about everything available, and eschews the chairs and couches in favor of sprawling on the floor with a blanket stolen from one of the piles.

Makkachin flops on top of him and immediately falls asleep. Victor glances at the people around him, chewing and swallowing a bite of his pizza.

"Are these movie nights 'talking' or 'no talking'?"

"Depends on who you're sitting by and if they've seen the movie, I think," Connie answers from her seat on one of the sofas, but she's already moving to sit by the newcomer on the floor with a small smile. It's still a bit of a novelty for her to see dogs again. Just. Any Earth-world pet really.

"I think we've spoken before. That's Makkachin, right?"

"Yes it is!" Victor says enthusiastically, twisting around to beam at the woman who has approached to answer his question and, presumably, coo over his dog.

(He doesn't blame her. Makkachin is adorable.)

"I, however, am terrible with names, so I'm afraid you'll have to help me with yours."

So long as she has his permission to coo, then she will. She pockets the small knife she had been using to slice her apple as she takes a seat, offering the slice of fruit to Makkachin.

"Connie. To be fair I don't think I mentioned it when we spoke. I'm not much for social media but I like to keep an eye on it."

Victor shimmies his hips to wake Makkachin up from his nap.

"Makkachin," he coos, trying to sound stern. "Only gifts. Don't go stealing food off of the table this time."

Makkachin accepts Connie's apple slice delicately in his teeth, wearing the expression of a too-clever dog who knows that rules only apply when someone is around to enforce them and that humans can almost always be counted on to indulge him.

"A lot of people here seem to feel similarly," Victor says with a shrug. "Me, I can't imagine how we all got along without it. But my social group is largely international, so I suppose I'm an exception."

Victor's dog is more interesting than his boyfriend (sorry, Yuuri). Robbie wouldn't dare bring his cat to a movie screening, but, when he sees that Victor has brought his giant fluffball, Robbie quickly grabs a blanket and stakes out a spot on the floor nearby.

The dog promptly falls asleep, because that is exactly how all of Robbie's plans go. So there are no stealth pettings.

"Talking, I think. I think it's kind of a drop-in, drop-out scene. I'm not staying for the whole movie."

"Oh, really?" Victor twists around to look at Robbie, using his skater flexibility to avoid disturbing Makkachin's nap as he does so. "Not your favorite movie then? I haven't seen it before."

"It's a great movie, but I've seen it a bunch of times." Robbie shrugs and glances up at the screen. The film's not on yet, so they've got time to talk about it. "I know what happens, so I'm not going to get too invested. Besides, it's so over the top. If you know enough of the quotes, you just start waiting for those scenes and kind of forget about the actual plot."

"I see," Victor says. "Do you think the jokes will translate properly, or should I take out my ear plugs and listen to it in English? Things seem to have worked out well so far, but I'd hate to miss something quotable because it doesn't sound as clever in Russian."

"Hm, good question. I think the ear plugs are pretty good, if you've been listening to me in Russian this whole time and still gotten my jokes."

Or... he could've not got any of Robbie's jokes. It's hard to say, now that he's thinking about it. Victor is the sunny kind of person who laughs all the time, anyway. "How do you know they're going to have the English version? It's probably Interlac."

[personal profile] the_real_sir_prize 2017-04-18 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Good point." Victor rubs his chin. "I assumed that, since Wash was seeking out old movies, they'd be in their original language. But this movie is a thousand years old; if it's not a remake, it's probably been dubbed over for an Interlac-speaking audience. Have previous movies been dubbed over?"

"I don't know," he said without pausing to think too much about it. "I didn't try taking my earplugs out. I usually just leave 'em in. It's easier that way. I barely understand hello in Interlac, and there's so many important phrases like "Watch out!", "Fire!" or "Emergency Oxygen Production Stop Button".
