Pidge could not believe that York got through five layers of what she considered her best encryption work. Was he that good or was it her locks that weren't good enough to keep him out?

Well, she'd gotten the last laugh. Behind her layers of coding, York had found...an order form for a dog cone.

She had a feeling she might be paying for that in this training session. Hadn't Wash said he liked to keep people guessing...? Did that mean he'd be giving her no instructions at all...?

True to his word, Wash had come to the training session as well, if only to watch (not to heckle, he has to remind himself. It's easy to slip back into old habits with York; it's different with Pidge). So he's in his sweats, leaning against the wall, with a bag of oranges and space capri suns at his feet. He'd been debating popcorn, but...well, old habits and Pidge. It would have sent the wrong impression.

He opens his mouth to reprimand Pidge - eyes forward; you can talk to Delta later - and closes it again. Not his session, and knowing York, Pidge will learn the hard way. He does have a few things to say about her progress, though. "She's got the basics down," he says. "We're working on throws, holds, and redirection - anything that uses her size to her advantage. Think sparring with CT."

"Think we can rig some stun batons that balance like her knives?" Light and quick without the lethality. Also: Stealthy. The trick to being a little guy in a fight (work surrounded by giants you think of yourself as a little guy) is going unnoticed till you're damn well ready to be noticed. As expected Wash has laid solid groundwork-

There's the lingering knee jerk resistance to considering Wash a solid teacher but, hey. Which of them is still alive? Not York. So.

"Just hand to hand today, then, I'll talk to you later about on the fly hacking and encryption. You got a wicked mind and a solid eye." Which from him is saying something. Delta 'steps' forward, flickering to just in front of Pidge which, well.

Distractions 101. Seeing as she'd just mentioned it herself she'll either pick up on it or not as York takes that moment to come in at her left. No 'ready go', no 'hands up', you don't GET that in the field.

"My bayard already kind of works like a long-range stun gun." It's important to be accurate about what it is, what it can do, and what she's used to. Stun batons would be fairly redundant with her current equipment.

She grins a bit at the praise, but in front of two experienced soldiers who aren't the complete lying idiots that ran the Garrison it's probably best not to gush too much.

...Because then she might have missed that little cue. It's not a hard thread to follow -holograms, distractions, work in the field- and her attention immediately hones in on York. She has no real information on who he is besides "indirect" and that means waiting for him to make the first move.

Aware, which is a bonus, small, which is to her benefit in the field. Tiny targets are harder to hit. Inexperienced which- on the one hand, good. On the other? Something they need to work on and it'll hit him later he's going at this session like he would with a full grown freelancer.

He comes in hard with a quick combo, a touch than he would normally to see what she does to counter it, if she counters it, if she dodges. A million and one ways to react-

What was Wash's advice? 'Blocking is easier than ducking?' So she does, letting his strikes hit her arms. But York is very strong, and Pidge suspects she won't have an opportunity to retaliate until she makes one for herself.

Where are his weak points? Throat, crotch, ankles are standard. Ankles are easiest for her to reach, so she aims a kick towards the vulnerable bone.

Aim low and go for somewhere vulnerable- not a bad tactic. York's footwork has him hopping back enough to avoid a hard hit as he swings around to try to go in for a grapple. Bigger opponent, reach, leverage, and weight are on his side- how's she avoid or escape? Wash is scrappy- well.

Wash was scrappy. Seems to have tightened up what he's taught Pidge which is good, she's observant which is also gonna keep her alive.

She knows it's easier to get a grip on someone that's your own size, so her movements are engineered to get him as close to the ground as possible. Keep him off balance and keep moving.

It's hard to keep low and go backwards at the same time, so she advances on him, still aiming for his legs. And if things go bad, she can always go between them and get behind him.
