Rico can't lie; it's the exact kind of reaction he'd wanted. The paper snapping up in the air is a little bit of a surprise though - he hadn't taken it for anything more than a toy. But Rico's instinct for feeling anything struggling under his boot is to press down harder, and that's exactly what he does. Normally it's somebody's face, but judging by the look on the kid's face? It might as well be the same thing.
