PR. Some people love it. Some people despise it. But for a superhero, public relations are a necessary evil. Especially when you want the entire galaxy to like you. The people that work for the Legion? They are PR wizards. Masterminds behind the charity calendars, PSAs, and their media relations, they managed to talk the Legion leadership into hosting a science fair.

For Coluan children.

The Legionnaires are expected to go through and vote on their favorites. For this, this means a sea of green faces talking down to them about things like hygiene fields, quantum storage devices, kinetic farming, and the like. The children seem to be ignoring each other and the adults. If asked, it’s very tersely explained to them, like they’re the same age as those in the fair, that they share their ideas and discoveries on the Sleep Net anyway. Rather than dream, Coluans discuss science with one another.

It’s pretty standard, save a mild fire when two inventions evolve to show a level of self-awareness and promptly declare a religious war on one another before promptly self destructing in an attempt to take each other with them.

It’s all very well and good, right up until they get to Quen Dux. He peers up at them and clears his throat, launching into a long, technical spiel that sounds like he’s been mentally writing the technical manual while waiting for them to arrive. He draws to a close, then sniffs. “In short, this device will allow us to ‘capture’ brilliant minds at the moment of death, then transfer them to ‘donor’ bodies of individuals with no brain activity.” He moves to turn it on, despite the lack of participants because, in all honesty, it’s common knowledge on Colu that humans enjoy watching blinking lights. Which might explain why every device shown so far has had several totally unnecessary blinking lights.

There’s a spark. An electrical groan. And the boy’s eyes go wide, the largest show of emotion that anyone’s had so far. He has enough time to go “Oh, spr-” before there’s a sound like a subwoofer overloading and everything goes black.

When the Legionnaires awake, they’re in the medbay. Again. Something feels… wrong As if sensing their distress, a grimacing, overworked nurse rushes over and checks them over before handing them a tablet with a form letter.
