Tadashi paused, thinking hard for a moment about how to explain this.

"The cultural narrative at the time was that boys weren't supposed to like 'mushy stuff'," he said finally. "Stories about feelings, as opposed to stories that happened to have feelings in them, were coded feminine, which was generally considered 'lesser' than masculine. You've gotten some kind of lecture on the history of sexism, right?"
