Movie Night II: The Moviening [Open]

Who| Wash and anyone who wants to come
What| Movie night!
Where| A large, nice lounge on Legion World
When| A few days after Murderworld and the night after the Anon Meme went up
Warnings/Notes| They're watching the Lion King. This should be interesting

It's been a few days since everyone's arrived back from Murder World, and the Anon Meme went up yesterday. Everyone needs a breather. It's time to watch a movie.

Grif

Grif actually, for once in his life, volunteered to do something. Even more shockingly, he's done what he volunteered to do.

It helps that it was pizza. Grif is serious about his half of the pizza spread (which he may or may not have overdone), and he gated to Earth himself to get his contribution to the snack table.

It's shitty vegan space pizza, unfortunately, but he likes to think he's finally found the slightly less shitty version of it. He covered the basics: faux-pepperoni, mushrooms, but also took note of the requests left for him on the meme. Grif's a lazy jackass, but he's a lazy jackass who loves junk food. Pizza preferences are sacred.

Once he's got that set out, he plates three whole slices and claims a chair with utmost smugness.

Next to him, Kubo looked experimentally over the pizza.

"It smells . . . different."

Good different? Maybe. He'd never seen anything like it. He'd mostly been eating veggie stir-fry in the cafeteria, not adventurous enough to try anything different.

"Is this from your time?" he asked Grif, figuring the person nearest the pizza would know most about it.

Given that Kubo briefly balled himself up during Mufasa's death scene and covered his face in what was very clearly a far more intense reaction to watching a cartoon death than even Disney warranted, he was still quick to try and stop Wash from doing something similar.

"I know it's just a story," he assured Wash, "I'm ok now. I was ok a few minutes after. It was a good story. The, uh." He cast around for something to put in. "The songs were interesting."

By the time the movie ends, Karkat's pulled himself back together. Watching the little roarbeast lose his dad and have to run from his home was an unexpected gut punch in the middle of what he thought was a dumb colorful distraction for particularly dim human children, and he'd be loathe to admit it now, but there was a lot of sniffling and eye-rubbing coming from his corner of the room after the wildebeest scene.

"I mean, it was just a gaudy version of the same sort of tired pablum they spoonfeed wigglers where I'm from, but... why the hell was there so much singing?"

Dave had parked himself on the couch next to Karkat from the get-go, eagerly anticipating the shitstorm that was no doubt about to ensue when springing the fucking Lion King on unsuspecting innocents. He was not disappointed.

"It's a Disney movie," he said with a shrug, one arm slung over the back of the couch. "That's just how they go. Singing and princesses and unexpected tragedies to traumatize kids for life."

Yeah, he totally heard that sniffling, you huge endearing sap.

York

[personal profile] goddamngrenades 2016-11-24 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
A little talking and a little legwork and York? Does in fact manage to swing in with some proper beer and a few cans of juice or soda or a weird mix of the two. Some tea. Canned coffee? He grabbed a little of everything and carries it in with a spring in his step. Real beer, real beer, not that he's dumb enough to have more than a few but-

Something that tastes familiar. He can live with that.

Beer's off to one side, all non-alcoholic shit is set off to the other and York? Finds himself a bowl for popcorn, a plate for pizza, one of the beers for himself and drapes over a sofa, balancing his plates precariously on his stomach while he cracks open his beer. Time for sitting and chilling and, maybe, singing along with all the songs under his breath.

Lies. You can prove nothing, Strider.

"Is this Disney of yours run by sadists? Because I had no idea there was such a thing as a movie that is the precise opposite of what I like, but holy shit if we didn't just found it tonight. This is an unprecedented event! I feel like there should be some sort of speech-intensive scientific gathering in response."

Actually, it wasn't bad for an animated film. But he has an image to maintain here.
goddamngrenades: (So you're saying it's impossible.)

The message one takes away shouldn't be 'don't challenge the status quo or you'll get killed by hyenas and fire' but that is this viewing's interpretation. York may be a little biased and a little sad- little slices of home are nice but they're nothing compared to a home he hasn't gotten to see in goddamn ever and never will.

One beer's not enough to make him maudlin but that's what he'll blame it on afterward. Once he's finished pasting on a smile and running som damage control for the more traumatized viewers.

"What, did the lion lovin' not do it for you?" Grinning, Dave leans back into the couch, gesturing dramatically as he speaks. "Hell, I expected an hour-long rant about how Timon and Pumba were clearly moirails and human cinema is a load of shit for leaving that sideplot unaddressed."

Clearly, they've watched way too many movies together.
dungenessmaster: (THIS.)

[personal profile] dungenessmaster 2016-11-24 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
"They are!"

The outburst is forceful and actually sort of... happy, at least for Karkat. He'd been thinking that the whole time and it was gratifying to hear Dave say it out loud first. He'd managed to absorb some of his neverending lectures about multifaceted troll romance. It was nice.

"They don't read flushed at all, but they're completely at ease with each other and they enrich each other's lives! They're better people because they have each other! And let's face it, that hysterical weasel creature needs a moirail."

[personal profile] turntex 2016-11-24 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Dave's grin just grows at that exclamation. Hell, he hadn't even been entirely serious or thinking too hard about it and yet he hit the nail square on the head.

But hey, Karkat likes to rant, so whatever makes him happy...

"People have been saying they're like, life partners or something for years," Dave says, eyes rolling under the shades. "But Disney's too 'family friendly' and thus too chickenshit to do anything at all risky by the standards of human media, so don't expect any actual confirmation of that sorta thing in the actual movies. Any of them. There were multiple sequels and a Broadway musical."
dungenessmaster: (At first I was like)

[personal profile] dungenessmaster 2016-11-24 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Ugh. Just what this movie needed, more singing. And life partners is just... squeamish humanspeak for being involved with someone of the same gender, right?"

He and Dave have had this awkward discussion before. About the sort of expectations a boy can grow up with when he's raised in Texas, about how Karkat can't relate but still sympathizes with the idea of not turning out the way you were supposed to. The delicate indirect language humans use is irritating sometimes, but being around Dave so much has practically made him fluent in Never Quite Getting To The Point.

[personal profile] turntex 2016-11-24 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, pretty much. Although some people like to say 'heterosexual life-partners' instead in the most extreme possible variation on no homo. Like they want you to know they wanna be with this person for the rest of their lives because they're so damn close but haha not like in a gay way or anything!"

Fucking hell. Daves shrugs and slumps against Karkat, nose wrinkling slightly in irritation.

"Y'know what, you're right. About shit in general, I mean. Humans as a whole are fucking stupid."

A shadow looms.

It's Parker, looking confused.

"Why did they do Hamlet with lions and a happy ending?"

Pizza is awesome and Dave hasn't had any in a very long time. For the food alone, this promises to be an excellent night. Except...

"Who the hell puts pineapple on pizza?" he asks out loud to the room in general, making a face at the fruit. "I thought the future would have finally done away with abominations like this."
bachido: (happy playing)

"All right, it affected me then," Kubo admitted. It was the truth and, well, if Wash wanted the truth, frankly, the truth WAS that he was fine by that point. He'd had his sympathetic sorrow, felt it, and let it pass on. This surely wouldn't be the last time he felt sad over someone else missing their parents, too.

"It made me think about how things might have been if I'd grown up in my father's fortress. I thought Simba was a bit selfish, but it seems like he never needed to think of anyone's needs but his own before his father died. Maybe I'd be more selfish too if I'd grown up like him, in my father's fortress, where nobody needed my help for anything."

He paused before adding, with a smile, "Mufasa did remind me of my father, too. Except my father was funnier."
